Rainier Valley Food Bank Marks Milestone in Community Investment

We’re thrilled to announce that we have crossed the finish line in fundraising for our new home and the Abundance Fund, which is bringing new programming to the community.

An unexpected gift of $500,000 put the campaign for the new home over the top.

“So many people in our neighborhood and across the region have contributed to this achievement,” said Executive Director Gloria Hatcher-Mays. “We are grateful to each and every one. Whether they gave a thousand dollars or $5, whether they offered their expertise or their time, everyone has approached this work with generosity and caring for neighbors and community. That includes our guests, who have been patient and encouraging throughout this long improvement!”

The new home and the Abundance Fund also ensure we are ready when emergencies strike. “When the SNAP funding crisis hit last fall, our community stepped up to take care of their neighbors,” Hatcher-Mays said. “The expansion of our facility and programming made sure their generosity got to where it was needed most, with efficiency and compassion. ”

More than 650 people contributed $17,361,157 to renovate our South Seattle food hub, reach more people with programs, and launch new programming like the garden, community kitchen, and grocery-style shopping. Overwhelming community support meant the campaign exceeded its original goal by over $361,157.

The new building, which opened its doors in September, has allowed us to:

  • Expand programs and increase the overall number of people served;

  • Improve community members' physical and mental health by reducing stigma around accessing services, cultivating a sense of connection and belonging; and

  • Build meaningful relationships between guests, volunteers, and community partners as everyone shares meals, learns new skills, and engages in collective action against hunger.

In June, we will install a new art piece called the Donor Tree to celebrate all the people who devoted many different talents and resources to making the new home a reality.
