Melva

Distribution Lead

Meet Melva, one of our longtime volunteers, and a dedicated distribution intern. Born in Houston, Texas, Melva moved to Seattle 40 years ago. For the past 15 years, Melva has spent her time volunteering with RVFB, and 8 months ago, she joined our intern program.

In addition to helping with everything in the distribution center, Melva focuses on showing appreciation and support to our volunteers.

Before joining us as an intern, Melva took a 4-year break from volunteering, and she shared that during that time she was experiencing grief. Returning to the food bank afterward, she saw bright horizons ahead and felt happy to “come back home.” She’s enjoyed reconnecting with her community since she’s been back at the food bank. Seeing old friends and familiar faces has made her feel supported and uplifted by her community’s kindness and respect.

After work, you might find Melva loading up her car with her fishing poles – she enjoys going fishing and spending time in the sun, enjoying all that nature has to offer.

If you’re looking for a delicious meal, Melva recommends her favorite Chinese Restaurant, Tai Tung Restaurant. She says you can’t go wrong ordering the shrimp fried rice, beef & broccoli, and Sake to drink.

Throughout her time at the food bank, Melva shares that she’s felt supported by her community and has learned how to speak up for all. For community members wanting to get involved at RVFB, she asks that you stop by and share your good spirit with us. Sign up for a volunteer shift to join in the fun!
